Wrestling pins the competition at GNAC TournamentPosted:
The Kearney High wrestling team kept their tournament win streak alive by claiming the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference championship. The Bearcats outscored a tough Scottbluff squad 212.5 to 199.
Isaac Stansbury reached the finals only to fall short in overtime to Keegan Hessler from Scottsbluff at 113 pounds. Scott Bauer (120lbs) reached the championship finals with an upset win over Alam Alverez from Lexington. Bauer was defeated in the championship match by Joseph Flores from Scottsbluff. Hunter Bamford continued his winning ways by pinning all of his opponents at 126 pounds. Austin Marshall (132lbs) also reached the championship finals only to fall to Colton Adams from Scottsbluff. Mason Merritt lost a close semifinal match and battled back to place third at 138 pounds. Kalen Mazankowski claimed the championship at 152 pounds. Mazankowski pinned all his opponents in route to victory. James Chamberlain had a strong tournament performance finishing fourth at 160 pounds. Trey Schlender reached the championship finals only to fall short against Ryan Kubr from Columbus. Quinton Ross avenged a loss from earlier in the season by defeating Edwin Perdomo from Lexington by fall to claim victory at 220 pounds. Ross’s win sealed the team championship for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats will move on to district competition next week against at Papillion LaVista High School. The top four individual placers at the tournament will move onto the state tournament the following week.
