Varsity finishes 3rd in Garden City


For the second year in a row, the Kearney High wrestling team finished in 3rd place out of a 32 team pool at the 58th Rocky Welton Invitational. This invitational featured teams from 4 different states and 6 of the top 7 teams were ranked in the top 2 in their respective classes.

The Bearcats placed seven wrestlers to finish with a 156 team points. Top performer Nick James (132lbs) reached the finals with victories over two ranked opponents. His semifinal match was an overtime victory over Cody Liles from Great Bend, Kansas. James came up short in the championship final against top ranked Michael Johnson from Lamar.

Andy Mason went 5-1 on the weekend and finished in 3rd place at 195 pounds. Mason picked up a huge pin in the consolation finals against Zeke Herrera from Garden City, Kansas. Trevar Bigelow (152lbs) and Phillip Moomey (113lbs) both finished in fourth place and finished 4-2 on the weekend.

Ashton Arrants (138lbs) and Lee Herrington (HWT) both picked up decision victories to finish in 5th place. Arrants used a late overtime takedown to defeat Pedro Ordonez Hugoton, KS 3-1. Trey Grube also battled back through the consolation bracket after a first round loss to finish in 6th place at 160 pounds. Grube picked up four straight victories through the consolation bracket.

Other Bearcat placers were Gabe Crocker 13th place (126lbs), Parker James 11th place (145lbs), Tyler Tracy 14th place (170lbs), Leo Palomo 10th place (182lbs), and Sean Jackson finished in 9th place (220lbs).

Bearcat wrestlers are back in action this Saturday at the GNAC conference tournament in Hastings. Wrestling starts at 10am.
