Lincoln East Dual and Gator Invite: Bearcats rebound from dual loss to win the Gator Invite

Kearney High wrestlers made a road trip to Lincoln to take on the Lincoln East Spartans in battle of two top 5 class A teams. This dual featured 14 ranked wrestlers, many of which were head to head throughout the exciting night of wrestling.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead winning 3 of the first 4 match ups to gain an early 13-6 lead on the Spartans. Lincoln East responded by winning the next 6 matches to flip the score to 31-13 in their favor. Dario Rodriguez picked up a pin at 220 to add to the Bearcats team score. However, this would be the last win of the night for Kearney High as Lincoln East would go on to win the next 3 match ups and solidify a dual victory by a final score of 44-19.

The following day the Bearcats took on 8 teams at the Lincoln Northstar Gator Invite. The Bearcats finished in first place ahead of Millard North by a 214 to 148 point margin.

Perry Swarm (106 pounds), Rylie Steele (126 pounds), Gage Ferguson (152 pounds), and Gauge McBride (152 pounds) all were champions of their individual brackets. Archer Heelan (113 pounds), Hunter Nagatani (120 pounds), Alex Hunt (195 pounds), and Dario Rodriguez (220 pounds) all finished as tournament runner-ups.

Cisco Rivas (132 pounds) and Tate Kuchera (160 pounds) both battled back from first round losses to claim third place. Both Rivas and Kuchera defeated the opponent they had lost to earlier in the tournament. Josh Pierson (182 pounds) and Peter Kreutzer (Heavyweight) both battled back after semi-final losses to claim third place as well.

“This was a good tournament for us to reset and get back to what Kearney High Wrestling is all about,” said coach Ty Swarm, “I was really proud of how our team competed today and the effort that our guys showed battling in each match”.

The Bearcats will travel to North Platte for a dual on Thursday and then will be back in Lincoln next Saturday for the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament hosted at Lincoln Pius High School.
