Ledesma Wins Council Bluffs Classic – Bearcats Finish 6thPosted:
The Council Bluffs Classic wrestling tournament was loaded with talent this year. Kearney High School battled a tough field of 32 teams to finish 6th at the end of the two day tournament. This tournament featured 5 different states as well as the number one overall rated wrestler in the country from Apple Valley Minnesota.
The Bearcats had three wrestlers reach the championship finals. Damon Rodriguez defeated Otis Rollins of Omaha North in the semi finals 3-2 before falling to Zac Hensley of Saint James Academy in the finals at 132 pounds. Trevar Bigelow reached the finals at 145 pounds with a semi final victory over Jason Wallace of Thomas Jefferson High School in Iowa. Bigelow came up short in the finals losing by decision to Brock Morgan from Apple Valley High School in Minnesota. Gabe Ledesma was the champion at Heavyweight. He defeated Levi Paulsen of Woodberry, Iowa by a 6-3 decision. Paulsen is a University of Iowa football commitment and was previously undefeated on the season.
Jordan Bober and Mason Merritt both finished 5th losing in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions in their respective brackets. Bober won by fall over Drew Orsdorff from St. James Academy in his 5th place match up. Merritt defeated Anthony Sherry from Glenwood, Iowa 6-5 to finish 5th at 160 pounds. Leo Palamo went 3-3 on the weekend finishing 7th at 195 pounds. Gabe Crocker went 5-2 at 120 pounds and finished in 9th place. Every Bearcat wrestler was able to pick up a win adding to the 399 point total and 6th place team finish.
The varsity wrestlers are back in action this coming Friday and Saturday at the 30 team Flatwater Fracas dual tournament in Grand Island. The Bearcats have finished 3rd and 2nd at this event over the past two seasons.
