Kearney Wrestlers Dominate in OgallalaPosted:
The Kearney High wrestling team dominated their competition at the Ogallala invite this past Saturday. The Bearcats finished the tournament with a 5 and 0 dual record and the tournament championship. The team combined for a impressive 322 points against their opponents while only giving up 51 to the opposition.
The first dual of the day matched up the Bearcats with Gordon-Rushville. Kearney high used momentum from numerous pins to finish the dual with a 56 – 18 victory. The domination continued in the second round as Kearney defeated Kimball 78 – 3. Third round action found Kearney against the host school Ogallala. The Bearcats prevailed again with a final score of 73 to 3. Lee Langenberg (170lbs) picked up his first varsity pin with a first period fall over his Ogallala opponent. In the final dual of pool play the Kearney High wrestlers handled Gothenburg with a winning margin of 72 – 12.
The four wins in pool play put Kearney into the championship finals against North Platte who had won their pool competitions verse Mitchell, Chase County, Valentine, and Hershey. The Bearcats battled in each match to finish the dual with another impressive 43 – 15 victory.
This dual started at 138lbs with Mason Merritt losing a hard fought decision to Paul Kraye from North Platte. Derek Beruman (145lbs) and Kalen Mazenkowski (152lbs) helped the Bearcats rebound by picking up convincing decisions against their opponents. Kearney high then fell short in the 160lbs and 170lbs weight classes with North Platte gaining momentum with two victories. Freshman Tim Dubry (170lbs) wrestled up a weight class and claimed an impressive victory by fall over his North Platte opponent at 182lbs. This was followed by another pin by Trey Schlender at 195lbs. After regaining the lead in the dual the Bearcats continued their attack with Quinton Ross (220lbs), Taylor Towery (285lbs), Gabe Crocker (106lbs), and Issac Stansbury (113lbs) all claiming consecutive victories. North Platte then defeated Kearney at the 120lbs weight class. Hunter Bamford (126lbs) and Austin Marshall (132lbs) finished the dual in exciting fashion by pinning their opponents in a dominating fashion.
Kearney High wrestling is back in dual action this Thursday at Columbus. The following day they will compete in the East / West duals in Lexington. The Bearcats will match up against North Platte, Gering, Gothenburg, and Chadron.
