Kearney Wins Battle of Top Ranked Teams


Kearney High School and Omaha Skutt Catholic both entered this dual ranked second in their respective classifications. The Bearcats were able to use some big wins as well as bonus points to defeat the Skyhawks of Omaha Skutt in their home gymnasium.

The night open with a battle of top ranked Heavyweight wrestlers going toe to toe. Lee Herrington currently ranked third in Class A out lasted Class B second ranked Trent Hixson 5-2. Brayden Smith followed up this victory with a decision victory over Caleb Luzure to give the Bearcats an early 6-0 lead. Omaha Skutt then got on the board with decision victories at 113lbs and 126lbs. However, Phillip Moomey added a pin at 120lbs to keep the Bearcats in the lead 13-7.

In the feature match up of the night, Omaha Skutt moved Korbin Meink, a three time state champion, up a weight class to challenge Nick James at 132lbs. James won this action packed match up 6-4 to add momentum to the Bearcats night. Skutt picked up victories in 4 of the next 5 weight classes by decision to keep within reach of victory.

Kearney was able to pull away by picking up bonus points with Teontae Wilson’s pin at 145 pounds over Jacob Hassenstab. The Bearcats were able to close out the dual by winning the last three weight classes to claim victory 34-19 over the the Skyhawks.
