Kearney wins 6 weight classes to claim Gator Invite titlePosted:
Kearney High placed all but one of their wrestlers in the top 3 of the Gator Invitational, including 6 individual champions. The Bearcats put 10 wrestlers into the finals to finish with 263 points, well ahead of second place Fremont who finished with 147.
Brayden Smith was named outstanding wrestler for his efforts at 120 pounds. Smith won his weight class with a 2-0 decision victory over Cody Fielder from Fremont in the finals. Fielder is currently ranked third in class A at 120 pounds.
Phillip Moomey (126 lbs), Nick James (138 lbs), Teontae Wilson (145 lbs), Sean Jackson (195 lbs), and Lee Herrington (HWT) all claimed individual championships. All 5 wrestlers won by either technical fall or pin in their finals matchup.
Dallyn Ritchie (106 lbs), Gage Ferguson (113 lbs), Jud Kuchera (152 lbs), and Dominic Tavis (182 lbs) all finished runner-up in their weight classes. Gauge McBride (132 lbs), Jeremiah Hagemann (170 lbs) and Conner Brown (220 lbs) all battled through the consolation brackets to finish in third place.
“We wrestled well today and we even felt like we could have won another weight class or two” said Coach Ty Swarm, “What a great start to the second half of the season. We plan to see our guys getting better each week. This is a great group of young men”.
Kearney High wrestlers have a string of duals in the upcoming week. They will wrestle on the road against North Platte on Thursday and then travel to the University of Nebraska Lincoln to face Omaha Skutt on Friday. The Bearcats finish out the week at home at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Midwest duals tournament this Saturday.
