Kearney Placed 4th at Flatwater FracasPosted:
Kearney High School finished fourth place out of the 25 team field at the Flatwater Fracas hosted by Grand Island Senior High School. The Bearcats finished with a 5-3 record during their two days of competition while facing some of the best teams in the state of Nebraska.
The Bearcats opened day one with a dual win over Bellevue West 65-9 followed by another convincing win over Lincoln Northeast 64-16. Kearney then defeated Bennington 46-30 and Great Bend, Kansas 40-25.
“We wrestled well day 1 and beat some really good teams,” said coach Ty Swarm, “our wrestling and effort improved each dual today”.
In the championship pool, Kearney High took on the top ranked teams in Nebraska. The Bearcats opened up the day with a 48-29 win over 2nd ranked Columbus. Hunter Nagatani provided a spark in this dual with a 48 second pin over a ranked opponent.
Kearney dropped its next three duals in tough matchups against top ranked Millard South 37-24, followed by Grand Island 45-33, and lastly Lincoln East High School 44-21.
Archer Heelan had a huge pin against Millard South against Caleb Coyle at 113 pounds. Peter Kreutzer avenged a loss from early in the season to pin Michael Isele from Grand Island with just 14 seconds left in the match.
“This is a great tournament for us to test ourselves against some of the best teams in the state. We competed well and grew as a team this weekend, “ coach Ty Swarm.
The Bearcat wrestling team will be off for Christmas break and be back in action January 2nd where they will face Amherst in a road dual. This dual begins at 6pm at Amherst High School.
