Kearney Finished Second at Higgins InvitationalPosted:
Kearney High School wrestlers finished second by a point and a half to tournament champions Bennington at the John Higgins Lexington Invitational. This tournament features 15 teams from across the state of Nebraska as well as one from Kansas.
Gabe Crocker continued his winning ways at 106 pounds. He finished the day in second place with a pin in the quarter finals and overtime decision in the semifinals. Crocker lost by decision in the championship finals to Preston Jurgens of Beatrice. At 113 pounds the Bearcats Jordan Bober finished in 5th place picking up four wins on the day. Josh Ross went up a weight class to compete at 120 pounds. Ross went 3-2 on the day and battled to a 5th place finish. Damon Rodriguez faced tough competition throughout the day and finished in third place at 126 pounds. Rodriguez lost in overtime in the semifinals only to bounce back and defeat Kansas state champion James Jurgens of Scott City, Kansas for third place.
Dante Rodriguez continued his winning streak at 132 pounds. Rodriguez pinned his way through the tournament including a pin over Brian Messersmith of Cozad in the championship final. Trevar Bigelow challenge himself throughout the day in a very talented weight class finishing 6th at 138 pounds. Derek Berumen went 3-2 at 145 pounds and placed 4th for the Bearcats losing in overtime in the consolation finals. Mason Merritt picked up some big pins at 152 pounds to finish 3-2 on the day and in 5th place.
James Chamberlain started the day of with a narrow victory over Brian Sunblade of Holdrege only to lose the next three matches and finish in 6th place at 160 pounds. Cameron Schlender added two pins to his day at 170 pounds in route to finishing in 5th place. Leo Palamo saw his first varsity tournament action at 182 pounds. Palamo came up short in the win column as did Jake Culey at 195 pounds.
The big boys battled for the Bearcats all day at the Higgins Invitational. Aaron Griffith finished in second place with two decision wins before falling to undefeated Alex Boryca of Cozad at 220 pounds. Gabe Ledesma tallied a pin and decision and reached the championship final at heavyweight. Ledesma lost in the finals to number 1 rated Harrison Phillips from Millard West.
The Bearcat wrestlers are back in action this coming Saturday at the Boone Central Invitational in Albion, Nebraska. This tournament will feature both varsity and junior varsity action for Kearney High.
