JV Kicks Off The Season At HomePosted:
The Kearney High JV Bearcats opened up the season this past Saturday at their own Invite in the brand new school. The atmosphere was electric and well attended. The Bearcats finished the day with 14 champions between the beginner and advanced brackets. The Bearcats also finished the day with 16 runner-ups between the two divisions. It was an impressive showing to the opening of the season.
In the beginner division, Jaegger Sell won his 98-105 bracket going undefeated and taking the gold picking up a tight fought 3-2 win over Grand Island’s Ball and picking up two falls along the way over fellow teammate Hunter Miller and Bridger Smith of Lincoln Southwest. In the 105-112 bracket, Dayethan Nelson placed 2nd. Nelson along the way to the silver medal pinned Ethan Dack of Grand Island and won a tight match 5-4 over teammate Justin Baumert. The 112-115 bracket, Antonion Gomez placed 2nd. Gomez second round match against Lincoln North Star’s Crosby proved to be Gomez’s toughest match for the day which came down the result of a 8-7 decision in favor of Gomez. Round 3 Gomez picked up the win in the way of a fall over Isaiah Hoard of Columbus. 117-121, and 118-121 brackets, Brandon Warnke and Cade Nicol both placed second picking up a combined two falls and two major decisions. Freshman Tyler Ritchie, placed 1st in the 123-125 bracket picking up two pins and decision along the way. Freshman Benjamin Soria placed 2nd picking up a fall and a major decision. J.D. Ellis placed 2nd in the 129-130 bracket. J.D. showed true grit this weekend picking up hard fought pins along the way. In the 135-136 bracket, Freshman Josh Pierson placed 1st picking up two decisions and a pin along the way. In the 137-144 bracket, Freshman Jackson Bespalec placed 2nd picking up a pin in the first round and a 6-4 decision in the second round. Sophomore, Kade Christ, placed 1st in the 144-148 bracket. Kade’s first round match proved to be the match of the day going into double overtime. Kade’s hard work and dedication in the room paid off as he was able to get and escape and a takedown to finish out the match over Dallin Cleverly of Lincoln East. Christ finished the day off with two more consecutive pins giving him the gold medal. Trevon Bauer placed 1st picking up all three wins by the way of falls. Trevon has battled through hand surgery this year from a football injury and continues to show his toughness on the mat by going undefeated for the day. First year wrestler, Alex Hunt, picked up his first silver medal of his young career going 2-1 for the day. Hunt’s first match of his career resulted in pin over Marcus Randall of Columbus late in the second period. Freshman Gabe Gilsdorf won his 161-168 bracket picking up two pins and a major decision. Tate Straatman placed 2nd in the 191-195 bracket picking up 2 falls along the way. First year wrestler Peter Kruetzer placed 2nd in the 232-240. Kruetzer had a great first showing by picking up a pin in his first ever match over Jeramiah Jorgensen of Lincoln East.
In the advanced division, Ben Crocker overcame a setback in his first round match in which he lost to Hastings’ Dalton Hansen by a 4-0 decision. It was just a two man bracket, so Crocker had to win the next two matches to win the bracket. Not only did Crocker win the next two matches, Crocker pinned Hansen back to back times to win the gold. In the 104-111 bracket, Dalen Ritchie had another great showing placing 1st picking up a first round pin and a tough fought battle against teammate Devon Sell winning a 2-0 decision. Gavyn Bober placed 2nd for the day in the 115-120 bracket. Bober picked up a 12-3 major in the first round and a pin over teammate Kaden Bonner. Freshman Gauge McBride placed 2nd for day going 2-1. McBride picked up second round pin over Abbey Bowers of Lincoln Southwest early in the first period and a hard fought battle over teammate Ian Smith with a 5-2 victory. In the 125-131 bracket, Koeby Bonner had a great day going undefeated and pinning all three of his opponents. Daniel Crocker placed 2nd in the 131-137 bracket going 2-1 for the day picking up a 9-1 major decision and a first round pin. Matt Oliphant placed 1st in the 139-144 bracket picking up a first round pin and a 3-0 decision in the second round. Sophomore, Jerimiah Hagemann placed first dominating his bracket earning 7-2 decision and close 1-0 decision in the second round against Jayden McLaughlin of Lincoln Southwest and a pin in the third round. Tyler Tracy placed 2nd in the 163-169. Tracy picked up a pin in the first round and a 6-1 decision in the third round. Adrian Martin and Isaiah Stalbird rounded out the 170-173 bracket placing first and second. Stalbird and Martin both pinned Alex Morales of Columbus before facing each other in the third round with the end result being Stalbird winning a 8-1 decision of Martin. Finishing out the Advanced division was Edwin Manzano in the 219-224 bracket. Manzano pinned Markell Jackson of Lincoln Southwest in the first round to claim the silver for the day.
Overall the weekend was a great success with some incredible wrestling and a few surprises along the way. The JV Bearcats had a tremendous showing with 51 wrestlers competing in both divisions. It was a great way to kick off the season competing in their brand new home with some great wrestling.
The JV Bearcats will be taking the JV 1 and JV 2 teams to Lincoln to compete at Lincoln North East JV tournament with wrestling beginning at 9 a.m.
