Junior Varsity Places 1st and 2nd at Pleasanton InvitePosted:
The JV Bearcats cut their break short to travel up the road to Pleasanton on Tuesday. The Bearcats took two teams to compete in the 9 team tournament. The Kearney JV Gold team won the tournament with four champions, four runner-ups, three third places, and two fourth place finishes. The Kearney JV Blue team took the runner-up spot finishing with one champion, five runner-ups, one third place, and four fourth place finishes.
The Kearney Gold team was led by freshman Devon Sell at 106. Sell went undefeated for the day going 3-0 on his way to receiving the gold medal. Sell wrestled tough throughout the day and earned a total of 30 team points to help the team to a championship trophy. Reece Nicol also helped the Gold team earn the top spot with his performance as well. Nicol finished his day by earning a pin against Dilan Smith of Overton in the first round and a tech fall in the second period against fellow teammate Cody Renken.
The Kearney Blue team was led by sophomore Izzy Bautista at 220. Izzy was the only champion on the Kearney Blue team going 3-0 for the day. Bautista picked up a pin against Pleasanton’s Michael Winberg in the Semifinals before facing Central Valley’s Michael Schumacher in a tight battle in which Bautista won 7-6 in the final seconds of the match. Five members of the Kearney Blue team, Caleb Bean, Payton Bottorf, Cody Renken, Tyler Tracy, and Connor Brown competed extremely well to earn the runner up spots to help the team to the runner up trophy.
The JV wrestlers will be back in action on Thursday January 8th at Gothenburg at 3 p.m. and the following Saturday January 10th at 10 a.m.
