Junior Varsity Finishes 3rd at Crusader InvitationalPosted:
The JV Bearcats competed this past Saturday at the Crusader Invitational held at GICC. The Bearcats competed with two teams and placed 3rd with the JV Gold team and finding two Bearcats in the finals and 5 others on the podium.
The Bearcats came in full force with a competitive JV Blue and Gold team. The Gold team ended up placing third for the day scoring 152 points coming up short behind runner up West Point-Beemer and Champions Columbus Scotus. The Bearcats competed extremely well with seven wrestlers finding themselves on the podium. At 106, Christian Dakan went 3-1 for day. Dakan picked up a fall, decision and a major along the way to his championship match in which he lost to West Point-Beemer’s, Jose Medina by a decision of 8-3. At 113, Koeby Bonner was the second Bearcat to end up in the finals and place second with his only loss coming from Nolan Barry of Adams Central in the finals. Junior, Johnnie McCann placed third for the day going 4-1 for the day. McCann picked up a tech fall against Adams Central’s Garrett Furrow, a major decision in the quarterfinals against Austen Eisenhauer of West Point-Beemer and a final pin in the third place match against Austen Eisenhauer of West Point-Beemer again.
Parker James at 138, placed 3rd for day going 3-1 with his only loss coming from the hands of returning state placer, Jayden Elge of Nebraska Christian. James picked up two pins along the way before being awarded the third place medal over Kyle Petree of Aquinas Catholic. Senior Dalton Hellman finished his career for Kearney Wrestling on Saturday placing fourth. Hellman wrestled a tough day going through some rough patches including an overtime win over Grand Islands Adrian Moreira. Hellman battled through and picked up three total wins for the day and lost in the final third place match to Columbus Scotus’ river Liebig by a decision of 6-4. 182 pounder, Tim Dubry, placed third going 4-1 for the day. Dubry won in dominating way picking up two pins, and a major decision on his way to the third place match. In the finals, Dubry faced Garrett Davidson of Cross County/Osceola. Dubry won by a decision of 10-4 to finish of the day. Freshman Lee Herrington placed third for the day at 195 going 4-1 for the day. Herrington pinned his first two opponents before a loss by Cross County/Osceola’s Kelly Clifford put him on the opposite side of the bracket in which Herrington wrestled back to pick up fall over Aaron Gonzalez of Hastings St. Cecilia. In the third place match, Herrington faced Smith Center’s Dalton Kuhn which resulted in Herrington’s bronze medal by the way of a decision of 10-4.
The JV Bearcats will finish up their season of competition this Monday, February 9th, at Grand Island Northwest with wrestling beginning at 4 p.m.
