Junior Varsity Finished Runner up at Franklin


The Kearney JV wrestlers traveled to Franklin on Saturday with high hopes claiming the team championship just as they had done the previous year. At the end of the day the Bearcats came up just short of team championship trophy by only three points to Oberlin. The Oberlin Red Devils of Kansas scored 188 team points to Kearney’s 185 at the Franklin Invite. The Bearcats met the Red Devils in three head to head matches in the finals in which they won two of the three. Overall the competition was at a high level with 17 teams competing and featuring a few returning state champions back. The Bearcats did manage to medal 12 wrestlers with one champion, and two runner ups.


At 145, Trey Grube was Kearney’s clear leader going undefeated for the day pinning his first two opponents and winning an exciting semi final over Clay Dickinson of Friend 7-5. In Grube’s first place match, he met Jacob Tracy of Gibbon in the match of the tournament going into overtime in which Grube won in sudden victory with an escape and enough heart and dedication to carry the team on his back.


Kearney also had two runner ups at 160 with Steven Berumen and at 195 with Lee Herrington. Berumen went 2-1 putting together two impressive pins before succoming Tabor Erickson of Oberlin in the second period. Lee Herrington put together an impressive day of wrestling as well going 2-1 picking up a pin along the way and an 8-4 decision in the semi finals. In the championship match Herrington found himself up against undefeated Red Diederich of Oberlin in which Herrington lost to claim the silver medal.


Other JV Bearcats receiving medals include 106 Salvidor Aguirre placed third, Gavyn Bober sixth, 113 Matt Ross placed third, 126 Hall Moomey placed 6th, 138 Parker James placed fourth, 152 Reece Nicol placed fifth,  170 Drake Wilkerson placed sixth, 220 Izzy Bautista placed third, and 285 Sean Jackson placed fourth.

The Kearney JV wrestlers have a busy week coming up with the Bearcats competing in Columbus on Thursday and at SEM on Friday.
