The Junior Varsity Bearcats competed in the Grand Island Central Catholic Invite this past weekend against some of the top ranked competitors and schools in the state. The bearcats competed against 15 other schools in which they finished fourth overall just missing out on placing over Madison by 10 pts.
Salvador Aguirre placed third at 106 and finished the day going 4-1 and defeating fellow teammate Matthew Ross in a forfeit in the 3rd place match. Matt Ross finished fourth at 106 for the day tallying up four pins against Adams Central, GICC, and West Point-Beemer. At 113 lbs., Josh Ross finished 3rd overall earning 3 wins by fall and finishing the day 4-1. 120 pounder, Johnny McCann finished the day with the 4th place medal. McCann earned a first match fall against Alex Dubas of Cross County/Osceola and then another win by fall over Keano Vilai of GISH in the consolation semi round. In the 3rd place match, McCann faced Peyton Grodrick of ADams Central who won by decisioin of McCann to give McCann a 2-2 finish for the day.
Ashton Arrants once again found himself on the podium earning the silver for the day with his only loss being to highly ranked Takoda Batenhorst (38-2) of Madison in the 126 lb. finals match with Batenhorst winning by a decision of 12-9. Arrants wrestled extremely well for day and racked up 3 pins en route to a second place finish for the day going 3-1.
Zane Hamaker at 138 placed 2nd place. Hamaker wrestled some stiff competition and picked up two decisoin wins over Adams Central and Smith Center opponents before facing a highly ranked Jaydon Elge of Nebraska Christian (34-4) in a tough fought battle finals match. Hamaker is now 20-4 for the season. Ashton Arrants and Zane Hamaker were the only two bearcats that reached the finals match.
The 145 lb. weight class proved to be another bracket for freshman Trey Grube. Grube was able to pick up a first round fall over Francisco Rodriguez of West Point Beemer before falling to GICC Austin Walton in the quarterfinals. Grube then wrestled through consolation and picked up two decisions and a pin before having to forfeit his 3rd place match due to his five match limit. Leo Palamo finished the bearcats medal winners out by placing 4th overall and picking up a pin over Tristan Lucas of Harvard and a decision over Jake Brunk of Shelton/Kenesaw before losing to Gage Grinnell of GISH in the 3rd place match.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Moday February 10th for their final competition of the year at Grand Island Northwest.
