Kearney Varsity and Junior Varsity wrestled head to head with North Platte at home Thursday. The atmosphere was electric and featured over 100 students in singlets cheering on their Bearcat Wrestlers. The evening started with the Junior Varsity winning 7 of the 11 matches, followed by the varsity capturing victories in 13 of the 14 bouts.
In Junior Varsity action, Koeby Bonner, Matt Ross, Caleb Crittenden, Joe Griffith, Detrick and Drake Wilkerson all won by pin over their opponents. Jackson Murphy and Andrew Dubowsky also picked up pins in their exhibition bouts.
Varsity action started at 106 pounds with Salvador Aguirre picking up a decision victory over Brandon Flanders 5-3, Jordan Bober and Gabe Crocker followed by pinning their opponents at 113lbs and 120lbs. Ashton Arrants won a hard fought battle at 126lbs with David Mata. Arrants won in overtime with a 8-4 decision. Damon Rodriguez picked up another Bearcat pin at 132lbs. North Platte got their only win of the night when Dylan Peterson defeated Zane Hamaker 4-3 at 138lbs. Kearney high rolled off 4 pins in a row at the next four weight classes. The quickest pin came from Zach Blaschko at 170lbs over Jayden Songster in just 0:38 seconds. North Platte forfeited both the 182lbs and the heavyweight division. Tim Dubry picked up a decision victory over Bradan Hengen at 195lbs and Arron Griffith won by fall at 220lbs over Bryan Halsted.
Kearney High is back in action this Saturday at the John Higgins Invitational. This invite will feature class A number 2nd rated Hastings High School along with 7th rated Lincoln Southwest.
