Grapplers finish second at East/West Dual Classic

The Kearney wrestling team had a strong showing at the East / West Dual Classic. This dual tournament featured teams from Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island The 5 team dual tournament rotates hosting sites between the competing schools on a yearly basis. This year Kearney High School was the host site.

In the opening round the Bearcats defeated Creighton Prep 51 – 25. This victory was sparked by a big win by senior Trey Schlender who pinned Jake Anderson who is currently the number one rated wrestler at 182 pounds. Freshman Gabe Crocker also picked up a big pin for the Bearcats in his first varsity match at 106 lbs.

Second round action featured Kearney high school competing against eventual champion Grand Island. Grand Island finished on top with a final score or 51 – 18. Isaac Stansbury, Hunter Bamford, and Trey Schlender were all able to pick up falls for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats rebounded well against Millard North and earned another dual win 43 – 20. Freshman Trevar Bigelow picked up his second win on the day along with other wins by fellow lightweight wrestlers Isaac Stansbury, Hunter Bamford. Seniors Quinton Ross and Taylor Towery also picked up big pins against the mustangs of Millard North.

In the final dual of the day Kearney High competed against Lincoln East. Derek Beruman stepped into the varsity lineup for the first time of the year and picked up a major decision at 160 lbs. Hunter Bamford, Issac Stansbury, Trey Schlender, and Taylor Tower also provide key pins to solidify a 46 – 27 for the Bearcats.

Kearney High School wrestling will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Grand Island Fracas. This dual tournament features a strong pool of competition and will be a great test for the Bearcat wrestling team. The action starts at 11:30am on Friday, December 14th.
