Kearney High School captured the GNAC conference championship for the 12th year in a row. The Bearcats finished with 220 points ahead of runner up Hastings High School who had 186.5 points. There were 11 wrestlers out of the 14 weight classes that finished in the top 3 of the conference tournament.
Seven wrestlers reached the championship finals. Ashton Arrants finished in second place at 126 pounds falling to top ranked Nolan Laux of Hastings in the championship match up. Damon Rodriguez also finished second losing in overtime to Brandon Kile of Hastings. Trevar Bigelow was the runner up at 145 pounds. Bigelow finished behind champion DeShaun Dixon from Hastings. Mason Merritt and Aaron Griffith finished as conference champions. Merritt defeated Dakota Hernandez from Lexington in the 160 pound championship. Hernandez is currently the top ranked wrestler in Class B. Griffith defeated Josue Ayala from Lexington in the 220 pound final. Cameron Schlender and Gabe Ledesma finished second at 182 pounds and Heavyweight. Both wrestlers lost to undefeated opponents.
There were four other wrestlers who finished third in their respective weight classes. Salvador Aguirre pinned Noah Matteo from Norfolk at 106 pounds. Jordan Bober pinned Alex Guerra from North Platte at 113 pounds. Gabe Crocker also defeated Brody Denny from North Platte by pin at 120 pounds. Leo Palamo outlasted Jaret Matson from McCook at 195 pounds to win by a 9-3 decision.
Other wrestlers placing at the conference tournament were Zane Hamaker (138 pounds 4th place), Drake Wilkerson (170 pounds 4th place), and Trey Grube (152 pounds 5th place). This tournament wrapped up the regular season for the Bearcat wrestlers. The squad will be back in action this week at the A-1 district hosted by Papillion LaVista High School.
