In the first year of attendance the Kearney High wrestling team captured the championship at the Lincoln North Star Gator Invitational. This tournament featured 10 class A teams. The Bearcats bested runner up Norfolk by a final team score of 237 to 154.5. Kearney had 10 wrestlers reach the finals and finished the tournament with 4 individual champions.
Gabe Crocker won his first two matches at 106 pounds only to lose to state number one rated Wesley Dawkins of Lincoln High School in the finals. Jordan Bober also reached the finals by picking up two falls but fell short in the finals against Aidan Arnold from Lincoln High School. Isaac Stansbury continued his dominance on the season by pinning all three of his opponents in route to a individual championship. Damon Rodriguez also claimed victory at 126 pounds after tallying a fall in the semifinals and a decision in the finals. Dante Rodriguez never wrestled out of the first period. He recorded three consecutive falls to win the 132 pound weight class. At 138 pounds Trevar Bigelow pinned his way to the finals only to fall short against Caleb Licking of Norfolk. Derek Berumen had a come from behind victory in the semifinals but fell to Thomas Dalton of Lincoln North Star in the finals at 145 pounds.
Mason Merritt dropped his opening bout to DeVonta Branch of Omaha Northwest but rebounded with four consecutive pins to claim third place at 152 pounds. Merritt’s victory in the consolation final was over the opponent he had lost to in the first round. James Chamberlain finished second at 160 pounds after recording two consecutive decision wins. At 170 pounds Cameron Schlender went 2-2 on the day. Schlender lost to Landen Thieman from Norfolk in the consolation finals. Tim Dubry also finished 4th at 182 pounds losing in the semifinals and consolation finals. Aaron Griffith claimed the fourth individual tournament championship for the Bearcats. He defeated Shane Kalin of Norfolk in the championship final. In heavyweight action, Gabe Ledesma battled to the finals but lost against Christian-Hernandez-Dehorta of Norfolk.
The Bearcats host their only home dual of the season this week against Columbus (1/16/14). The following day the team will compete at the East / West Challenge which is a dual tournament hosted at Lexington.
