For the second year in a row, Kearney High School claimed the Lincoln North Star Gator Invitational championship. The Bearcats finished with 233 points ahead of runner up Bellevue West at 154 points. The invitational featured 11 class A teams from Omaha, Lincoln, and Fremont.
Kearney finished the tournament with 13 wrestlers placing in the top 4. Ashton Arrants won his first varsity tournament with a decision victory over Glenn Cass from Omaha Benson at 126 pounds. Damon Rodriguez continued his winning ways with three pins to claim the tournament title at 132 pounds. Rodriguez pinned Anthony Tucci from Bellevue West in the championship final. Aaron Griffith won the 220 pounds title for the second year in a row. He defeated Ian Hirsh from Omaha Bryan 16-5 in the championship final. Gabe Ledesma had three pins and won the championship at heavyweight. Ledesma pinned Jacob Hansel from Omaha Northwest in the finals match up.
Zane Hamaker reached the championship final at 145 pounds but came up just short of victory losing by a last second takedown to Dillion DeRosier from Bellevue West. Zach Blaschko also suffered a loss to Ryan Plambeck in the championship matchup at 170 pounds. Blaschko picked up two pins to reach the finals.
Jordan Bober (113lbs), Bryce Bottorf (138lbs), Mason Merritt (160lbs), and Leo Palamo (195lbs), all finished in third place. Christian Dakan (106lbs), Gabe Crocker (126lbs), and Time Dubry (182lbs) finished in fourth place.
Kearney varsity wrestling is back in action this week on Thursday at Columbus for a dual and on Saturday, January 17th at the Midwest Duals. The Midwest Duals is hosted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. The Bearcats will have 5 duals with the first one starting at 10am.
