Council Bluffs Classic Champions

The Bearcat wrestlers staked claim to the first annual Council Bluffs Classic tournament championship.  This tournament featured 28 teams from 5 different states.  Kearney finished with 541.5 points ahead of runner up Grand Island who had 479.5 points.  The tournament featured a Gold and Silver bracket format which was based of pool wrestling during the first day of competition.  The Bearcats qualified all 14 wrestlers for the Gold bracket which led to the eventual team championship.

Three wrestlers won their individual weight brackets.  Isaac Stansbury won the 120 pound division with a pin in the finals over Riley Klein of Underwood, IA.  Trevar Bigelow opened some eyes by winning the 138 pound division.  Bigelow pinned Dante Todd of Grand Island, NE in the final.  Dante Rodriguez continued his dominance on the season by pinning his way through the 132 pounds bracket.  Rodriguez pinned Kansas state champion Blake Stovall in the finals.  He was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament for his efforts.

In the consolation bracket, Damon Rodriguez went 6-1 on the weekend finishing in third place.  Rodriguez decisioned John Mottl of Grand Island in the consolation final.  Gabe Crocker reached the semifinals in the 106 pound bracket only to lose his next two matches and finish in fourth place.  Gabe Ledesma also reached the semifinal at heavyweight but lost consecutive 1 point match ups to finish in fourth place.

Derek Berumen battled through the 145 pound bracket to finish in 5th place.  Aaron Griffith also found his way to the award stand by placing 8th at 220 pounds.  Other Gold Bracket placers were:  Jordan Bober 113lbs (13th), Mason Merritt 152lbs (12th), James Chamberlain 160lbs (9th), Cameron Schlender 170lbs 11th, Tim Dubry 182lbs (10th), Jake Culey 195lbs (11th).

The Kearney High Wrestling team will be back in action at the Flatwater Fracas on December 20th and 21st.  This will be the first dual competition of the year for the Bearcats.
