This weekend 11 Bearcat wrestlers took to the mat to kick off the preseason at Conflict at Carver in Iowa City, IA. This was most of the guys first time wrestling since summer camps got over. Wrestling at Carver were Archer Heelan, Gage Ferguson, Junior Ganoa, Rylie Steele, Phillip Moomey, Kaden Bonner, Colton Kowalek, Carter Ables, Teontae Wilson, Jud Kuchera & Steven Berumen.
Kearney High School opened their 2016-2017 wrestling season in a dominating fashion. The Bearcats had 8 individual champions and placed 13 of 14 weight classes in the top 3. This event featured four of the top seven teams in class A as well as the Hastings High School who is currently ranked 7th in class B.
This past Saturday the Bearcats picked up right where they left off this summer competing at the Blue Chip Fall Brawl in Kansas City. Eight wrestlers took to the mats at a loaded pre-season tournament that featured brackets that had much as twenty State Medalists in one bracket.
The Bearcat wrestling team won the Lincoln Northstar Gator Invitational for the third straight year. This invitational features 11 teams from Nebraska Class A. Kearney finished with 220.5 points ahead of runner up Lincoln Pius who had 153 points.
The Kearney High wrestling team stayed busy this offseason. Over 40 wrestlers spent time at summer camps, clinics, spring and fall tournaments. These events took place anywhere from Kearney to as far as Dubuque, Iowa.
The University of Nebraska at Kearney and Kearney High wrestling teams joined to host the Blue Gold Tournament and Clinic on Saturday, October 26th. This event featured wrestlers from preschool through High School.
The Kearney High Wrestling team qualified for the State Dual Championships that will be held on February 23rd at The University of Nebraska at Kearney. The Class A competition will feature the top 8 teams in the State. The Bearcats are seeded third and will face Omaha North first round.
The Kearney High wrestling team claimed the A-4 District Championship out scoring a tough Creighton Prep team 195 to 158.5. This marks the second A-4 District Championship for the Bearcats in as many years. Kearney will send 10 wrestlers to the 2012-2013 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament. The Bearcats finished the day with six district champions, two runner-ups, and two third place finishers.
