The Midwest Duals featured 6 high school and 26 college wrestling teams. Kearney High school went 5 and 0 on the day in duals and won the first ever high school division dual championship.
In the opening dual Kearney defeated North Platte 58-20. The Bearcats picked up 5 pins and a technical fall during the opening round. In the second matchup, Kearney faced Sargeant Bluff out of Iowa. After dropping the first two matches Kearney went on to win 9 of the next 12 matches including pins from Ashton Arrants (126lbs), Trey Grube (145lbs), Mason Merrit (160lbs), and Aaron Griffith (220lbs). The final score of the dual was 50-19. In round 3, Kearney defeated Augusta Kansas 47-16.. During this dual Parker James (138lbs) and Drake Wilkerson (170lbs) got their first varsity matches of the season. Both were able to come away with wins. This dual also featured the return of Cameron Schnlender at 182lbs. Cameron picked up a pin in the first period against Scott Hooglugt in just 0:57 seconds. In round 4, Kearney defeated Bennington 54-12. The Bearcats won 11 of 14 weights and picked up four pins and three major decisions.
In the championship match up the Bearcats faced Amherst. The Broncos have won the state championship in Class D the previous 4 years. They are currently ranked 1st in class D with 9 rated wrestlers. The Bearcats are currently 3rd in class A with 7 ranked wrestlers. The dual started at 132lbs with Damon Rodriguez picking up a 4-0 decision victory over Brandt Florell. Zane Hamaker followed with a huge major decision victory at 138lbs over Colten Bergt. The Broncos got on the board by winning the next two weight classes. Logan Dibbern won by decision over Trevar Bigelow at 145lbs and Devin Dibbern won by fall over Trey Grube. Mason Merritt responded for the Bearcats with a pin over Dawson Trampe at 160lbs. Amherst countered with a pin of their own at 170lbs with Jacob Klingelhoefer winning by fall over Zach Blaschko. Tim Dubry got the win at 182 pounds for the Bearcats with a 3-2 decision over Dane Bogard. Cameron Schlender moved up a weight class to defeat Jacob Martenson by fall at 195lbs. Aaron Griffith won a hard fought battle with Peyton Schake to pick up a 6-4 decision victory in overtime. Amherst notched another win at heavyweight with a 1-0 victory for Tanner Hircock over Gabe Ledesma. Salvador Aguirre battled to a victory at 106lbs with a 1-0 decision over Trace Baasch. Jordan Bober followed with a major decision victory over Breidyn Cumpson at 113lbs. At 120 pounds Gabe Crocker won by decision 4-2 over Peyton Cumpson and Ashton Arrants finished the dual with an 8-2 decision over Kalen Klingelhoefer. The final score of the dual was 38-18.
Kearney wrestling will be back in action Thursday, January 17th at home for a dual with North Platte. Wrestling begins at 6:30pm. On Saturday, the Bearcats travel to the Lexington Invitational. Wrestling starts at 9am.
