Bearcats Win John Higgins InvitationalPosted:
Kearney High School won the John Higgins invitational over a tough field of highly rated teams. The Bearcats finished with 199.5 points to win the championship. Runner up Lincoln Southwest had 192.5 points and third place Hastings finished with 176 points.
Four Bearcat wrestlers reached the finals. Jordan Bober defeated Preston Jurgens from Beatrice in the 113 pound championship. Damon Rodriguez outlasted Cameron Williams from Lincoln Southwest 2-0 in the 132 pound final. Aaron Griffith suffered only his second loss of the season in a hard fought battle against Kyson Schnell from Lincoln Southwest. Gabe Ledesma picked up a pin in the championship battle at Heavyweight. Ledesma’s pin capped the team championship for the Bearcats.
Salvidor Aguirre finished in 5th place. He was 3-2 on the day. Gabe Crocker finished in 5th place at 138 pounds and Ashton Arrants finished 6th at 126 pounds. Zane Hamaker accumulated a 3-2 record and 5th place finish at 138lbs. At 145 pounds, Trevar Bigelow finished fourth and picked up two pins along the way. Mason Merritt also finished in fourth place for the Bearcats and finished with a 3-2 record. Cameron Schlender finished in 4th place. He was 4-1 with four pins.
Damon Rodriguez was named the outstanding wrestlers of the John Higgins Invitational. Rodriguez defeated Brandon Kile from Hastings in the semi final and Cameron Williams from Lincoln Southwest in the championship final at 132 pounds. This weight class featured 5 rated wrestlers.
The Bearcats varsity squad will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City, Kansas.
