It has been 8 years since the Kearney High wrestling team has won its home invite. The year the Bearcat wrestlers reclaimed the title. Kearney topped the Islanders of Grand Island by 9 points to win the 2014 Kearney High Invitational championship. Grand Island has won the tournament title the previous 8 seasons.
The Bearcats had five finalist and three individual champions. Damon Rodriguez pinned Dylan Peterson of North Platte in the finals to claim the championship at 138 pounds. Mason Merritt was the 160 pound champion picking up a major decision over Isaac Odell of Lincoln East. Gabe Ledesma claimed the heavyweight championship with a 7 – 4 decision over Kyson Schnell of Lincoln East. This was the second year in a row that Rodriguez and Ledesma have won the Kearney High Invitational.
Jordan Bober was the runner up at 113 pounds. Bober came up short in the championship final losing by decision 3 – 2 to Kobe Paczosa of Columbus. Aaron Griffith also reached the finals at 220 lbs. Griffith lost by fall to Javier Silva of Grand Island.
Kearney High placed wrestlers in all 14 weight classes to claim the team championships. 11 of these weight classes placed in the top 3. Salvidor Aguirre, Gabe Crocker, Ashton Arrants, Trevar Bigelow, Hudson Snider, and Leo Palamo all picked up big wins in the consolation bracket to claim third place in their respective weight classes. Tim Dubry finished 4th at 182 pounds while Josh Ross and Tommie Kucera both finished in 6th place on the day.
“We won the close matches and picked up bonus points when it mattered” said Coach Ty Swarm. “This was true team championship and we could be more excited about the way our team battled today”
The Bearcats are back in action this coming Friday and Saturday at the Council Bluffs Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Kearney High is the defending champion of this 32 team multi-state tournament. The tournament is held at the Mid-America Center and wrestling starts at 1pm on Friday.
