Kearney High claimed the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference team championship for the 11th straight year. The Bearcats finished the tournament with 215 points with Norfolk finishing second at 151 points and Lexington in third at 136 points. Kearney put 9 of 14 wrestlers into the championship finals and placed 11 of 14 in the top 4 in the eight team field.
Gabe Crocker finished second at 106 pounds losing in the championship finals to Carter Woehlk of Columbus 5-3. Jordan Bober picked up a decision and pin prior to losing to Brandon Kile from Hastings in the championship final at 113 pounds. Isaac Stansbury stayed undefeated on the season winning a battle of 1 vs 2 class A ranked wrestlers in the finals at 120 pounds. Stansbury defeated Nolan Laux of Hastings in the championship bout 9-0. Damon Rodriguez was the runner up at 126 pounds losing narrowly to Keagan Hessler of Scottsbluff 9-6. Dante Rodriguez tied the Class A career pins record with a fall in the championship final at 132 pounds over Dylan Peterson of North Platte.
Trevar Bigelow battled a tough field at 138 pounds. Bigelow upset the number 3 seed Nate Morrow from Hastings in the first round. Bigelow then lost two straight matches to ranked opponents before defeating Kasey Taylor from McCook to place fifth. Derek Berumen defeated Austin Matthews of North Platte 1-0 to reach the championship final at 145 pounds. Berumen lost to Colton Adams of Scottsbluff in his championship matchup. Mason Merritt finished third at 152 pounds with a 3-1 record while recording 3 falls. Merritt defeated Nate Kathol from Norfolk in the consolation championship. James Chamberlain bounced back from a first round loss and was able to pin Brady Michel from Hastings for 5th place at 160 pounds.
Cameron Schlender battled through the 170 pound bracket to win a conference championship. Schlender defeated Jobie Loving from North Platte in the championship final 5-4. Tim Dubry returned to the lineup at 182 pounds. Dubry dropped to decision victories to opponents from Lexington and Hastings. Jake Culey rebounded from an early loss to pick up a pin over Wyatt Olcott from Columbus for fifth place at 195 pounds. Aaron Griffith was the conference champion at 220 pounds. Griffith defeated Shane Kalin of Norfolk in the championship bout. Gabe Ledesma finished second in the heavyweight division. Ledesma defeated a highly ranked wrestler from Norfolk in semifinal action before losing 1-0 to Andrew Aratani from Scottsbluff in the championship final.
The Bearcat wrestlers are back in action at the A-2 District competition held at Millard South High School on Saturday, February 15th.
