Kearney High put 9 wrestlers into the finals of the Lincoln Northstar Gator Invite to help claim its fifth straight Gator Invite team title. The Bearcats finished with 207 points, ahead of runner up Omaha Central who had 169 points.
Freshman Archer Heelan won the 106-pound championship, as did Junior Gauge McBride at 138 pounds. Three senior Bearcat wrestlers also won the tournament championship. Phillip Moomey was named the tournament outstanding wrestler after claiming the 132-pound title. Nick James defeated the third-ranked wrestler in class A to win the 145-pound weight class. Colten Kowalek followed up with a pin in the finals to claim the 152-pound championship.
Hunter Nagatani (113 pounds), Gage Ferguson (126 pounds), Carter Abels (160 pounds), and Gus Franzen (170 pounds) all finished as runner up in their respective weight classes. Bronson Amend finished in third place at 182 pounds. Amend avenged a loss from the first round to finish in third place.
Kearney High Wrestlers will compete at home on Thursday, matching up in a dual competition against North Platte. The Bearcats will honor their seniors along with several Hall of Fame inductees. Saturday, Kearney travels to Lincoln Northeast for the Heartland Athletic Conference.
