The seventh-ranked Columbus Discovers traveled to Kearney for the first Bearcat home dual of the year. Kearney won 12 of 14 matchups to defeat Columbus 59-10.
Seniors Jud Kuchera (152lbs) and Matt Oliphant (160lbs) opened up with wins for the Bearcats. Kuchera pinned Jose Lopez in the first period and Oliphant picked up a decision victory 5-4 over Blaze Standley. This put Kearney up early 9-0. Columbus rebounded picking up a major decision and pin at 170 pounds and 182 pounds to lead 11-9 going into the 195-pound match up.
The 195-pound bout featured #2 ranked Sean Jackson from Kearney vs #5 ranked Anthony DeAnda. Jackson took a 2-0 lead in the first and was able to turn and pin DeAnda to start a string of victories for Kearney.
The Bearcats didn’t lose another match. Kearney picked up pins from Lee Herrington (HWT), Phillip Moomey (126lbs), and Nick James (145lbs). Moomey pinned the fifth-ranked wrestler in his weight class with a first-period cradle.
“I think Columbus came out with some great energy, especially in the first couple matchups,” said head coach Ty Swarm. “Sean Jackson had a big win to turn the momentum in our direction and everyone just followed his lead from there”.
The Bearcats are back in action at the Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City, Kansas. This is a two-day tournament featuring many of the top teams from surrounding states. Wrestling starts at 9:30 am on Friday.
