Bearcats Win 500th Dual at UNK Midwest Duals

In the opening round of the Midwest Duals, Kearney High School defeated Lincoln Pius 72-6 to reach 500 dual wins in school history. Against Pius, Trey Grube avenged a loss against second ranked wrestler in his weight class by technical fall. This dual was followed by wins over Cheyenne Central 64-6, and Columbus Scotus 57-18.

“500 dual wins means we have great wrestling tradition at Kearney High School. I was proud to share this moment with Coach Tom McCann today. I was just a small part of this number.”Ty Swarm

In the championship dual the Bearcats faced class B top ranked Gretna. This was a rematch from the finals of the Flatwater Fracas in December.

The dual started at the 138-pound class, and within four bouts, the Dragons held an 18-3 lead. Kearney’s only early win came from Teontae Wilson at 145 pounds, who came away for a 6-4 decision. Wins by Reece Nicol (170), Izzy Bautista (220, Lee Herrington (285) and Brayden Smith (106) cut the lead to 24-21, but another Gretna pin put the Dragons ahead 30-21 with three matches to go.

“They pinned more than we did. We just can’t give up that many pins and expect to win,” Swarm said.

Kearney won two of the last three, but a decision by Phillip Moomey and a pin by Nick James couldn’t bring the Bearcats back. The final dual score was 34-30 in favor of Gretna.

“We’re learning we have a good dual team. There is a good amount of talent on this team, we still have to get a little developement out of them so we are at our best in February” Ty Swarm

Kearney High Wrestlers will travel to third ranked Columbus for a dual on Thursday. Their next tournament will be the Rocky Welton Invitational on January 27th and 28th in Garden City, Kansas.
