Kearney High School wrestlers took the mat against some of the best wrestlers in the Midwest this past weekend. The Bearcats competed at the 40 team Council Bluffs Classic on Friday and Saturday, finishing in 5th place.
Phillip Moomey was the champion at 132 pounds and Nick James was the runner-up at 145 pounds. Other medalists included Gus Franzen (5th at 170 lbs), Gage Ferguson (6th at 126 lbs), Hunter Nagatani (8th at 113lbs), and Rylie Steele (8th at 120lbs),
In the championship final at 132 pounds, Phillip Moomey defeated Antrell Taylor from Millard South 2-1. “Philip did a great job controlling the match and staying focused,” said coach Swarm, “he had a great day and really battled through some tough matches”.
Nick James found his way to the finals of the Council Bluffs Classic for the second straight year. James won a hard-fought semifinal bout against Levi May from Millard West but came up short in the finals against and talented wrestler from Apple Valley, Minnesota.
“This was a challenging tournament for our team due to getting snowed out last weekend in our first competition,” said coach Swarm. “I am extremely proud of the effort we saw today from our guys and the way they persevered through some tough times”.
Other wrestlers competing at the Council Bluffs Classic were: Archer Heelan (9th at 106 lbs), Gauge McBride (9th at 138 lbs), Colten Kowalek (5th silver bracket, 152 lbs), Carter Abels (9th at 160 lbs), Josh Pierson (16th at 182 lbs), and Dario Rodriguez (5th silver bracket, 182 lbs).
Kearney wrestlers will be back in action this weekend at the Grand Island Fracas dual tournament. This is a 28 team competition featuring the top teams in Nebraska. Wrestling starts at 10 am on Friday.
