Bearcats Place 3rd At Council Bluffs ClassicPosted:
Kearney finished 3rd out of 35 teams at the Council Bluffs Classic. This is a two day tournament featuring teams from 5 different states. The Bearcats put 13 of 14 wrestlers into the Gold Bracket to accumulate 410.5 points. Apple Valley, Minnesota finished in first place with 703 points and Fort Dodge, Iowa was runner up with 544 points.
Ashton Arrants and Trevar Bigelow were the high placer’s for the Bearcats, both finishing in 4th place. Arrants and Bigelow both won their first 5 matches before coming up short in both their semifinal and consolation final match ups. Bigelow has now placed three times at the Council Bluffs Classic.
Freshman Nick James had an outstanding tournament. He finished in 5th place with a 7-1 record. James defeated Thomas Cahill from Papillion LaVista in the 5th place match. Other top 8 placers were Salvidor Aguirre (106lbs) who finished in 7th place with a 5-3 record, Jordan Bober (120lbs) who finished 8th with a 5-3 record, and Sean Jackson (220lbs) who finished 8th with a 5-3 record.
Phillip Moomey finished in 13th place at 113lbs, Gabe Crocker finished 12th at 126lbs, Parker James finished 10th at 145lbs, Steven Berumen finished 10th at 160lbs, Avery Carpenter finished 30th at 170lbs, Leo Palamo finished 11th at 182lbs, Tim Dubry finished 9th at 195lbs, and Israel Bautista finished 9th at Heavyweight. Bautista finished his tournament with a pin over Seth Jimmerson from Missouri Valley. This pin gave Kearney bonus points to jump ahead of Plattsmouth into 3 place in the tournament standings.
The Kearney wraps up first semester wrestling action this Friday and Saturday at the Flatwater Fracas in Grand Island. The Bearcats have placed 4th, 3rd, and runner up over the past three seasons at this event.
