Bearcats Place 2nd Out of 17 at 2016 Franklin InvitePosted:
The Kearney Bearcats finished second in the 17 team field scoring 160.0 points only 9 points shy of the champions of Oberlin Kansas with 169 points.
The Bearcats battled through some tough rounds which at one point landed them in 9th place after stumbling in the quarter finals. The Bearcats bounced back into the top 3 after the consolation semis putting points on the board where they mattered the most.
The Bearcats ended the day with one champion at 106 Dalen Richie. Dalen went undefeated for the day going 3-0 and capped the day with a pin over Hastings’ Dylan Miller late in the 3rd period. Dalen continues to be an anchor in the lower weights for the Bearcats therefore making him the wrestler of the week. He is currently 13-0 on the season! At 113, there were two placers in Colten Kowalek placing 4th and Gavyn Bober placing 2nd. At 126, Isaiah Medina showed his competitiveness by placing 3rd in his first varsity tournament. Medina also earned the honors of the wrestler of the week by placing at the invite going 3-1. At 132 Teontae Wilson placed 3rd going 4-1. Wilson proved to be dominate for the day with his only loss being to Vinny Pearson of Gibbon with a 20-3 record. Wilson picked up pin over in round 1, a pin in the quarterfinals, a fall in the cons. semi, and in the 3rd place match, Wilson once again stuck Minden’s Lucas Svoboda in the second period. Matt Oliphant at 138 placed 4th for the day going 3-2 and picking up 2 pins and major decision along the way. Johnnie McCann placed 5th at 138 with a record of 3-2 for the day. Reece Nicol placed 5th at 152 with a record of 3-2 for the day. Steven Berumen placed 4th at 160 going 3-2 and pinning his opponents on all three of his wins. Edgar Boteo at 170 placed 6th going 2-3 for the day. Adrian Martin at 182 placed 5th for the day going 2-2. Finishing up the Bearcats for the day was Tim Dubry placing 3rd at 220. Dubry started the day off with a loss against Konnor Witt of Oberlin with a 10-7 decision. Dubry would wrestle back on the back side picking up 3 pins to meet Konnor Witt again in the finals. This time Dubry controlled the entire match and took the 3rd place finish over Witt with a 6-2 decision.
The Reserves also competed this week at Gothenburg. 25 wrestlers competed in the JV invite. The wrestlers were broken up into 4 man round robin style of wrestling. The reserves had 5 champions in their brackets; 126B Alex Arrants, 132B Christian Dakan, 132D Beau Sostad, 138A Payton Bottorf, and 138C Austin Siegal. Runner-up placers included; 113A Brandon Warnke, 138B Jerimiah Hagemann, 138B Jeffry Holbrook, and 152A Justin Smith.
This week concluded an extremely busy and successful week of wrestling with the opportunity for all of the Kearney High wrestlers getting the chance to wrestle. The Bearcats will be back in action in another busy week with the JV’s wrestling at home against Columbus in the home duals Thursday Jan. 14th, JV 2 and reserves at SEM on Friday Jan 15th, and JV 1’s at the Midwest Duals at the Buffalo Country Fairgrounds Jan. 15th.
