For the second year in a row the Bearcat wrestling team finished runner up at the Flatwater Fracas. This year’s tournament featured 28 teams from 3 different states. Kearney had 6 pool play duals followed by 2 championship pool match ups.
Kearney opened action against Lincoln Southeast. The Bearcats won this dual 49-8. Phillip Moomey and Trevar Bigelow both had victories over the 4th ranked wrestler in their weight classes. Round 2 found Kearney picking up 7 pins and winning big over Aurora 70-3. In a third round match up with Omaha North, Kearney used 9 pins to win 56-18. Nick James had a come from behind victory against second ranked Otis Rollins of North. James picked up an overtime takedown to win 10-8. Kearney then battled Cheyenne East out of Wyoming. The Bearcats cruised to victory 48-15. Izzy Bautista picked up the fastest pin of the dual in just 0:38 seconds. Kearney then defeated Lexington 55-21. Nick James beat his second ranked opponent of the day by picking up a 3-0 decision over Alex DeSantiago. Leo Palamo also pinned his opponent in just 0:32 seconds. In the final pool play matchup, the Bearcats defeated Syracuse 54-6. This put Kearney into the championship bracket against the winners from the 3 other pools.
The Bearcats opened up championships bracket competition defeating Norfolk 45-25. In the championship final, Kearney took on undefeated Gretna. The Dragons and Bearcats battled in a back and forth dual. Gretna finished the day with the championship, nudging Kearney 30-27. Nick James, Ashton Arrants, Parker James, Trevar Bigelow, Phillip Moomey, and Jordan Bober all picked up wins for the Bearcats. Bigelow and Bober picked up crucial pins during the dual.
Kearney opens up second semester competition at home with a dual against Omaha Skutt Catholic on January 5th at 5pm. Omaha Skutt is currently ranked number 1 in Class B.
