Kearney JV wrestlers took the championship at the SEM invite competing against 16 teams and coming out on top with 183 team points to second place North Platte St. Pat’s 130 team points. The Bearcats claim the gold for the fourth consecutive year.
The JV Gold team finished the day with 10 weight classes placing including two champions. At 195, freshman Lee Herrington placed first going 3-0 for the day. Herrington consistently finds himself on the podium week after week with this week being no different. Herrington picked up a pin in the first round, and win over North Platte St. Partrick’s Felipe Martinez in the semifinals, and finished off the day with an impressive win the get the major decision over host SEM’s Chantz Klein. The other champion for the day was Kearney’s 285, Dillon Trujillo. Trujillo finished his day with nothing but pins going 3-0 before wrestling fellow teammate representing the JV Blue team, Trevor Hausermann. Trujillo’s dominance helped the Gold team top all other competitors for the day. Other wrestlers for the Gold team that placed were Gavyn Bober at 106 (2nd place), Matt Ross at 113 (2nd place), Jon Erickson at 120 (4th place), Cesar Alvarado at 145 (2nd place), Reece Nicol at 152 (3rd place), Steven Berumen at 160 (4th place), Damien Scovill at 182 (4th place), and Izzy Bautista at 220 (2nd place).
The JV Blue team also had a successful day placing 6th in the invite and placing four on the podium. At 106, Devon Sell placed placed 4th, 152 Cody Renken placed 4th, 220 Sean Jackson placed 4th, and at 285 Trevor Hausermann placed 2nd.
Kearney wrestling will be back in action Thursday, January 17th at home for a dual with North Platte. Wrestling begins at 6:30pm. On Saturday, the Bearcats travel to the Lexington Invitational. Wrestling starts at 9am.
