Bearcats fourth at State; two State ChampionsPosted:
Kearney High School finished fourth at the NSAA State Championships. The Bearcats ended the tournament with two individual state champions, a state runner up, and a 6th place finisher. Champion Omaha North edged runner up Millard South 156 to 155.5. Kearney finished fourth with 102 points behind Grand Island who had 127 points.
Isaac Stansbury won the state championship at 120 pounds. First round Stansbury defeated Thomas Cahill of Papillion LaVista by fall and then won a close battle with Jonathan Killingsworth from Lincoln Southeast 7-6. In the semifinal, Stansbury defeated Mason Wright from Elkorn South. Stansbury defeated Nolan Laux of Hastings for the second time this season in the championship final 3-2 to claim the state title.
Junior Damon Rodriguez finished as a state runner up at 126 pounds. Rodriguez opened in first round action with a fall over Mathew Abdouch of Omaha Burke. In the quarterfinals, Rodriguez defeated Aaron Houser from North Platte by decision 7-0. The semifinal match found Rodriguez pulling out a narrow victory with a 3-2 decision victory over Robert Quandahl from Millard North. In the state finals Rodriguez came up short against Robert Ozuna of Omaha North fall by decision 10-4.
Dante Rodriguez won the 132 pound weight class claiming his third straight state championship. Dante pinned Austin McDonald from Papillion LaVista in the opening round. In quarterfinal action Rodriguez pinned Errich Holsten of Hastings in the second period. The pins continued for Rodriguez as he won by fall in the semifinals over Dylan Peterson of North Platte in just 0:35 seconds. In the championship final Rodriguez won by technical fall over Connor Fox of Omaha Burke 19-2.
Gabe Ledesma brought home the sixth place medal at Heavyweight. Ledesma one his opening round match up over Shane Henderson of Elkorn South. Ledesma lost in the quarter final but was able to bounce back and when his next two matches to get into the medal rounds. In the consolation semifinals Ledesma lost in overtime to Christian Hernandez of Norfolk. In the 5th and 6th place match up Ledesma lost to Terry Jeub of Millard South.
Other Bearcats records at the state tournament were Gabe Crocker (1-2), Jordan Bober (1-2), Trevar Bigelow (2-2), Derek Berumen (2-2), Mason Merritt (2-2), James Chamberlain (1-2), Cameron Schlender (2-2), Jake Culey (0-2), Aaron Griffith (1-2).
The Bearcats are back in action at the State Dual Championships hosted at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Saturday, March 1st. Kearney will face Papillion LaVista in the opening round at 8:30am.
