Bearcats Finish Third at State Dual ChampionshipsPosted:
The Kearney High School wrestlers finished their season with a third place finish at the NSAA State Dual Championships. The Bearcats capped off the season with a victory over Grand Island to capture the third place trophy.
In the opening round, Kearney defeated defeated the Hastings Tigers 48-20. The dual started at heavyweight with Aaron Griffith picking up a decision victory over Emil Sommerfield from Hastings 7-1. Hastings then won 4 of the next 5 weight classes to take a 17-9 lead in the dual. Kearney then captured 7 of the next 8 match ups to win the dual. The win was capped off by a pin from Freshman Lee Herrington at 220 pounds over Dylan Croon in just 0:32 seconds.
In the semifinals, Millard South topped the Bearcats 41-15. Kearney high won by fall at 132 pounds with Damon Rodriguez pinning Ben Chamberlain in the second period. Mason Merritt (160lbs), Cameron Schlender (182lbs) and Lee Herrington (220lbs) also picked up decision victories over their opponents.
In the battle for 3rd place the Bearcats faced 2014 State Dual Champions Grand Island. Kearney High got behind early as Grand Island won 4 of the first 5 weight classes (113lbs, 120lbs, 126lbs, 138lbs). Damon Rodriguez picked up a pin at 132 pounds to put Kearney on the board 6-13. The momentum then turned as Kearney won 7 of the next 9 weight matches. Aaron Griffith picked up big pin at Heavyweight over state runner up Blaine Morrow from Grand Island. Christian Dakan sealed the dual victory by defeating Emerson Urbina 4-3 at 106 pounds. The final dual score was 30 – 25 in favor of the Bearcats.
This is the third year of the State Dual Championships. The Bearcats have placed 4th, 3rd, and 3rd over that time frame.
