Bearcats finish third at State Championships

The Kearney High Wrestling team finished in 3rd place at the State Wrestling Tournament. Over the three days the Bearcats claimed state medals at 6 weight classes.

Issac Stansbury finished in 3rd place at 113 pounds. Stansbury lost to eventual State Champion Isaac Deloa of Millard South in the semifinals only to battle back and pin his next opponent in the wrestle back. Stansbury then finished the tournament off with a decision victory over Brandon Kile of Hastings for third place.

Hunter Bamford capped off a stellar career by claiming his third State Championship. Bamford pinned his way to the semi-final match up with Jacob Wilcoxsen of Omaha Burke. A 5 -1 decision in this match impressed all in attendance. Bamford finished his state title run with a 9-0 major decision over Matt Bolan of Grand Island.

Austin Marshall also found his way to the State finals at 132 pounds. Along his way he picked up three falls in dominating fashion. Marshall came up short in an exciting finals match against Trey Trujillo of Grand Island 10 – 8.

Kalen Mazankowski also reached the championship finals at 152 pounds. Mazenkowski picked up major decisions in his first two bouts and defeated returning state champions Justice Bridgeford of Omaha Burke in the semi-final match up.. The championship final got away from Mazankowski as he fell to Ralstons Antoine Tureaud by decision.

Trey Schlender had a big quarterfinal win over Ryan Kubr of Columbus.at 182 pounds. After a disappointing loss in the semi-fianal match, Schlender picked up a win against Haris Talundzic of Grand Island as well as another win against Kubr of Columbus to claim third place.

Quinton Ross also reached the semifinals at 220 pounds. Ross lost in overtime to eventual champion Dj Castillo of Lincoln High. Ross finished the tournament with a win in the 5th and 6th place match against Cody Harris of Lincoln Southeast .

The Bearcats will finish their season at the State dual championships. The duals are hosted at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Kearney high will be the third seed and face Omaha North in the first round match up starting at 3pm.
