The Bearcat wrestling team brought plenty of excitement to their home invitational on Saturday.  Kearney High challenged the defending state champions Grand Island all day only to fall short of the team title by 5 points.  This push was led by four individual championships from Gabe Crocker (106lbs), Damon Rodriguez (126lbs), Dante Rodriguez (132lbs), and Gabe Ledesma (HWT).

At 106 pounds Gabe Crocker went 3-0 claiming the tournament title.  He pinned Jason Christiansen from Lincoln Southwest in the finals.  Damon Rodriguez entered the 126 pound weight bracket as the fifth seed.  Damon defeated a state medalist in all three of his victories in route to his championship.  Dante Rodriguez dominated the 132 pound weight class pinning all three of his opponents.  This is Dantes third KHS invitational championship.  Heavyweight action saw Gabe Ledesma pin his way to his first varsity championship.  Gabe pinned Alek Morales of North Platte in the finals.

The Bearcats also had three runner up performances.  Trevar Bigelow pinned his first two opponents before falling to Andrew Rojas of Grand Island in the finals.  Isaac Stansbury also reached the finals picking up a pin and decision along the way.  Isaac did not wrestle his finals match due to injury.  At 220 pounds Aaron Griffth battled his way past Kyson Schnell of Lincoln Southwest and Travis Hartwig of Hastings before falling to Chase Reis of Grand Island in the championship final.

In consolation action, Kearney High wrestlers Jordan Bober and James Chamberlain claimed third place.  Bober pinned Kobe Paczosa-Hall of Columbus at 113 pounds and Chamberlain followed suit by pinning Jobie Loving of North Platte.  Cameron Schlender (182lbs) and Jake Culey (195lbs) both went 2-2 on the day finishing in fourth place.  Mason Merritt (152lbs) and Derek Berumen (145lbs) both went 3-2 on the day and finished in 5th place.  Tim Dubry (182lbs) picked up a first round pin before dropping his next three matches to finish in 6th place.

The Bearcats are back in action this coming Friday and Saturday, December 13th & 14th, at the Council Bluffs Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
