Bearcats Finish Second at Flatwater FracasPosted:
The Kearney High wrestling team went 6-1 in dual competition to finish second out of 32 teams at the Grand Island Flatwater Fracas. The two day tournament features 4 team pool competition the first day followed by placing pool competition the second day.
On day 1 the Bearcats faced Lincoln Southwest, Norfolk, and Mead, Colorado in their pool competition. In the opening round Kearney High defeated Lincoln Southwest 51-12. In a highlighted matchup between the top two wrestlers at 120 pounds, Kearney’s Isaac Stansbury defeated Jonathan Killingsworth of Lincoln Southeast 6-0. The Bearcats then took on Norfolk and came out on top 42-24. In heavyweight action Gabe Ledesma defeated the number 3 ranked Christian Hernandez of Norfolk in overtime. In the final dual the Bearcats defeated Mead, Colorado by a score of 66-18. Kearney High claimed victory in 11 of the 14 weight classes.
Cross pool championships were conducted with the winners of each pool. Kearney High matched up with 5th ranked Papillion LaVista. This was a heated battle with both teams winning crucial match ups. The Bearcats were able to prevail with big wins coming from Derek Berumen at 145 pounds as well as Cameron Schlender at 170lbs. The win advanced Kearney High to the championship pool the following day.
In championship pool play Kearney High faced Grand Island, Bennington, and Omaha North. The Bearcats opened with Grand Island and suffered their first dual loss of the season 57-14. The Bearcats rebounded defeating Bennington 40-27 and also Omaha North 56-22. “Finishing 2nd out of 32 teams is a great accomplishment for us but we have a good amount to improve on before the season is finished. We are proud of our team and their effort the first half of the season” said Coach Swarm.
Kearney High wrestlers will be back in action after Christmas break at the Lincoln North Star Invitational. This tournament is held on Friday, January 10th starting at 3pm.
