Bearcats Finish Second at East / West ChallengePosted:
The Bearcat wrestling team went 4-1 at the East West Dual Challenge in Lexington, Nebraska. The team finished in 2nd place out of the 10 team field. Kearney High competed against Crete, Aurora, Grand Island Northwest, Omaha Skutt Catholic High School, and Gothenburg.
In the opening round Kearney defeated Crete 57-17. Matt Ross picked up his first varsity win at 106 pounds pinning Jacob Campbell of Crete. The Bearcats also picked up pins from Damon and Dante Rodriguez as well as Cameron Schlender and Gabe Ledesma.
The following dual against Aurora found the Bearcats winning in dominating fashion by a score of 63-18. Kearney picked up first period falls from Gabe Crocker (106lbs) Jordan Bober (113lbs), Josh Ross (120lbs), Damon Rodriguez (126lbs), Dante Rodriguez (132lbs), Mason Merritt (152lbs), James Chamberlain (160lbs), Tim Dubry (182lbs), and Gabe Ledesma (HWT).
The third round match-up was against Grand Island Northwest. The Bearcats again came out on top by a final score of 58-18. Kearney recorded 7 pins and picked up decision victories by Gabe Crocker (106), Mason Merritt (152lbs), and Cameron Schlender (170lbs). The quickest pin was by James Chamberlain (160lbs) in just 0:30 seconds of the first period.
In a marquee matchup, Kearney High took on Class B number 1 ranked Omaha Skutt Catholic in fourth round action. The Bearcats jumped out to an early 15-3 lead fueled by wins from both Damon (126lbs) and Dante Rodriguez (132lbs) as well as a Derek Berumen (145lbs). Omaha Skutt then took the next 5 matches in a row to take the overall lead 18-15. Aaron Griffith picked up a decision victory at 220 pounds followed by a pin at heavyweight by Gabe Ledesma to reclaim the lead 24-18 in favor of Kearney High. Omaha Skutt finished by winning the next three bouts to claim victory by a final score of 37-24.
In the final dual of the day, Kearney defeated Gothenburg 72-10. The Bearcats received forfeits in 4 weight classes and picked up pins in 6 others. Jake Culey picked up his first pin of the tournament in a win over Tyler Miller at 195 pounds. Aaron Griffith followed this victory with a pin over Chad Schmiett in just 0:54 seconds into the first period.
Kearney High will be back in action this coming Thursday at North Plate High School for a dual. On Saturday both the Junior Varsity and Varsity will compete in the John Higgins Invitational at Lexington High School.
