Bearcats Finish Runner up with 4 Finalists and 2 State ChampionsPosted:
Kearney High School put four wrestlers into the State finals at the NSAA State Championships. Two of which finished as State Champions. The Bearcats finished as State Runner up to champion Millard South, trailing the Patriots 175.5 to 152.5
Brayden Smith (106lbs), Gauge McBride (126lbs), Tyson Cepel (138lbs), Teontae Wilson (145lbs), Tyler Tracy (170lbs), and Izzy Bautista (220lbs) all finished 2-2 at the tournament but failed to advance into the medal rounds Friday night.
Junior Sean Jackson reached the semifinals at 195 pounds. Jackson lost to Javon Malone from Omaha Bensen in the semifinal bout 2-1. Jackson then rebounded with a win his next match and eventually finish in fourth place.
Senior Trey Grube (160lbs) and Sophomore Nick James (132lbs) both battled their way into the state championship finals. Both Grube and James came up short in their final matches finishing as state runner ups.
Sophomore Phillip Moomey (120lbs) and Junior Lee Herrington (HWT) were crowded State Champions in their respective weight classes. Moomey pinned returning state champion Jack Huffman from Millard West in 2:24. Herrington pinned Joel Anstine from Bellevue East in 30 seconds. Herrington won all four of his state championship bouts by pin.
“We had some ups and downs this year. We have not put four wrestlers into the finals in the past 5 years and this was great to see. However, we only placed one wrestler on the backside which was far less than years past” said coach Ty Swarm, “We needed more backside points to compete with Millard South. On the bright side we had many kids still in and competing for medals Friday night. This state tournament experience will be important going into next year.”
Kearney High School will be the second seed this weekend at the NSAA State Duals hosted at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The Bearcats open up dual competition with Bellevue East starting at 9am.
