Bearcats Finish Runner Up at NSAA State DualsPosted:
Kearney High School wrapped up the 2016-2017 wrestling season as the NSAA Class A state runner up in duals. The Bearcats opened up first round competition with a 54-21 win over Bellevue East. In Semifinal action Kearney defeated Lincoln East 50-19. In the finals Kearney came up short against Millard South by a score of 41-25.
Kearney picked up pins in the first two duals from Brayden Smith (106lbs), Phillip Moomey (120lbs), Nick James (132lbs), Teontae Wilson (145lbs), Trey Grube (170lbs), Reece Nicol (170lbs), Sean Jackson (195lbs), and Lee Herrington (HWT). Phillip Moomey and Reece Nicol also added pins in the championship dual to help the Bearcat wrestling team reset a school record for pins in a season at 275. The previous record was 272.
Phillip Moomey, Nick James, Reece Nicol, and Lee Herrington were all undefeated on the weekend. Moomey and Nicol also won all their matches by fall including a pin from Nicol over Brayden Trimble from Millard South in the championship dual. Trumble was a state runner up a week ago at 170 pounds.
“This was a great group of wrestlers to coach” said coach Ty Swarm, “we appreciate the dedication from our seniors and are excited about the group we have coming back next year”.
Kearney finished the year as the state runner up in both the Individual and State dual championships. The Bearcats were 16-3 in dual competition and won 3 individual tournaments including districts.
