Bearcats crown 9 individual champions at John Higgins InvitePosted:
The Kearney High Wrestling Team had over 40 wrestlers compete in the varsity and junior varsity divisions at the John Higgins Lexington invitational this past weekend. The varsity crowned 4 individual champions and the junior varsity crowned 5. The junior varsity competition did not keep team score. The Bearcats claimed the varsity championship over runner up Lincoln Southwest and third place Lexington. Hunter Bamford was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. Hunter beat two undefeated number one ranked wrestlers and didn’t give up a single point during the entire tournament.
In the varsity finals at 113 pounds, Isaac Stansbury defeated Brandon Kile from Hastings for the championship. Two weight classes later, Hunter Bamford (126lbs) dominated previously unbeaten Danny Ibarra of Lexington 13-0. Austin Marshall followed suit with an overtime victory against Dakota Hernandez of Lexington. Capping off the championships for the Bearcats was Kalen Mazankowski (152lbs). Mazankowski defeated Logan Hunke of Cozad 5-2.
Trey Schlender (182lbs) and Quinton Ross (220lbs) also reached the championship finals only to fall short and finish as runner up in their respective weight classes. Gabe Crocker (106lbs), Scott Bauer (120lbs), Derek Berumen (145lbs) all finished in 5th place with James Chamberlain (160lbs) and Taylor Towery (HWT) finishing in 6th place.
In junior varsity action Kearney High was able to claim championships at 106 pounds with Josh Ross as well as at 113 pounds with Jordan Bober. Ashton Arrants continued the dominance winning another championship at 120 pounds. The upper weights finished the job with Aaron Griffith (220lbs) and Gabe Ledesma (HWT) both claiming championships as well.
Also placing for the Bearcats: Cody Troudt (4th – 120lbs), Bryce Bottorf (2nd – 126lbs), Brady White (3rd – 132lbs), Dalton Hellman (3rd – 138lbs), Zane Hamaker (3rd – 138lbs), Parker James (138lbs – 5th), Hudson Snider (6th – 145lbs), Andy Mason (5th – 152lbs), Cody Gilsdorf (5th – 160lbs), Tim Dubry (5th – 170lbs), and Chase Lundgren (5th – HWT).
The Bearcat wrestling team is back in action with both the varsity and junior varsity competing in the Boone Central invitational in Albion, Nebraska on January, 26th.
