A2 District Champions; 13 Wrestlers Going to StatePosted:
The Kearney Wrestling Team claimed their 3rd straight district championship on Saturday at Millard South High School. The Bearcats placed 13 of their 14 wrestlers in the top 4 which in turn qualifies them for the state tournament. Kearney battled the host school Millard South all day to win the district team championship with 220 pts to 215 pts.
The Bearcats put 8 wrestlers into the district finals. At 106 pounds Gabe Crocker finished runner up to Nate Rodriguez from Millard South. Jordan Bober defeated Matt Torring from Millard West at 113 pounds to claim the district championship. Isaac Stansbury stayed undefeated at 120 pounds on the season with his victory over 4th ranked Ryan Kostszewa from Millard South. Stansbury pinned Kostszewa in the third period for the district title. Damon Rodriguez won the 126 pound championship with a decision victory over Zac Charity of Millard South. Dante Rodriguez continuing his pining ways in route to the 132 pound championship. Rodriguez won by fall in the first period in all three of his matchups. Derek Berumen finished as the district runner up at 145 pounds. Berumen lost to Alex Mendez from Millard South in the championship final. Cameron Schlender narrowly lost in overtime to 3rd ranked Shanon Jackson of Omaha Central in the 170 pound championship finals. Aaron Griffith also lost a by close decision to 3rd ranked Marc Tompsett from Millard South in the 220 pound final.
In the consolation bracket Kearney High claimed fourth place at 138 pounds with Trevar Bigelow going 2-2 on the day in his matches. Mason Merritt (152 lbs) bounced back from a first round loss to pick up three straight victories and a third place finish at 152 pounds. James Chamberlain punched his ticket to the state tournament by placing third at 160 pounds. Chamberlain picked up three pins on the day including one over Garrett Cundiff from Millard West in the consolation finals. Jake Culey earned a berth to state tournament at 195 pounds. Culey went 2-2 on the day and finished in fourth place. Gabe Ledesma bounced back from a loss in the semifinals at heavyweight to pick up two pins and a third place finish. Ledesma pinned Jeremy Kowalski of Papillion LaVista South in the consolation finals. This pin sealed the team championship for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats will travel 13 wrestlers to the State Championships starting on Thursday, February 20th. This event is held at the Centurylink Center in Omaha. By winning districts Kearney High has also earned an automatic qualification for the State Dual championships to be held March 1st at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
