Kearney Klash Caps Off A Successful Offseason For The BearcatsPosted:
The Kearney High wrestling team stayed busy this offseason. Over 40 wrestlers spent time at summer camps, clinics, spring and fall tournaments. These events took place anywhere from Kearney to as far as Dubuque, Iowa.
In the spring the Bearcats had 4 placers at the Midwest Classic Nationals. Ian Smith (1st), Tyson Cepel (6th), Steven Berumen (8th), and Sean Jackson (8th). Many wrestlers prepared for this event by joining the Golden Eagles wrestling club. This club practiced twice a week throughout the spring.
The team traveled to Gering, Nebraska in early summer for their first team camp. Kearney finished the day undefeated with a 7-0 record. The following day the team competed in UNK Blue team camp. The Bearcats had two teams competing. Kearney Gold finished 2nd and Kearney Blue finished 8th. Both teams competed in the Division 1 bracket. Jordan Bober and Nick James were selected for the LTG – Legitimate Tough Guy award for camp.
Dubuque, Iowa was the next stop for the Bearcats. Two teams competed at the Iron Sharpens Iron Camp. Kearney Gold finished in second place with a 8-1 record. Kearney Blue finished with a 7-2 record and placed 10th. This camp featured Jordan Burroughs, Jake Varner, Tom Brands, and many other outstanding clinicians.
UNK Gold team camp was the following weekend. Kearney again had two teams compete in this camp. Kearney Gold finished in second place in the Division 1 bracket. Kearney Blue finished 5th in the Division 1 bracket. Ashton Arrants and Phillip Moomey were selected for the LTG award for their teams.
A couple wrestlers competed in spring and summer tournaments. Phillip Moomey competed at the North Plains Regional finishing 1st in both Freestyle and Greco. He also finished 2nd in Greco and 3rd in Freestyle at School Boy Nationals. Lee Herrington represented Kearney High School at Freestyle and Greco Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota. Lee finished 3-2 in Freestyle and 2-2 in Greco.
Fall tournaments were the most recent highlight for Kearney wrestlers. Leo Palamo and Phillip Moomey both finished 4th at the Fall Brawl in Kansas City, Missouri. The Bearcats had 7 wrestlers compete at this tournament. Teontae Wilson, Jud Kuchera, and Phillip Moomey also competed at the Monster Match and Big Horn Nationals in Denver, Colorado. Phillip Moomey finished runner up at the Monster Match. Wilson and Moomey also competed at Preseason Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Moomey finished 4th at this event.
The Bearcats wrapped up the preseason with 21 wrestlers competing in the Kearney Klash Takedown Tournament. Ian Smith, Gavin Bober, Tyson Cepel, Matt Oliphant, Salvidor Aguirre, Ashton Arrants, Parker James, Trevar Bigelow, and Israel Bautista all finished in first place. Colten Kowalek, Koeby Bonner, Nick James, Trey Grube, Tim Dubry, and Lee Herrington all finished runner up in their brackets.
Kearney High starts conditioning week November 9th and the first official practice is on November 16th. All wrestlers will open up competition on December 5th at the Kearney High Invitational.
