Bearcats Finish 3rd at State ChampionshipsPosted:
Kearney High School finished 3rd at the Class A Nebraska State High School Championships. The Bearcats placed 6 wrestlers in the top 6 finishing the tournament with 103 points.
Aaron Griffith was the top place winner for the Bearcats. Griffith lost in overtime in the state semifinals to Kyson Schnell from Lincoln Southwest but was able to rebound and pick up a victory over Aaron Svoboda from Grand Island and Nick Pray from Omaha Creighton Prep to claim third place at 220 pounds.
Ashton Arrants avenged a quarterfinal loss to Dax Galloway from Omaha Central in his 5th place match up. Arrants was able to pin Galloway in the second period. Trevar Bigelow finished in 5th place at a 145 pounds. Damon Rodriguez earned his 4th state medal finishing in 5th place at 132 pounds. Rodriguez lost to eventual champion Jonathan Killingsworth from Lincoln Southeast in the quarterfinals. Bigelow pinned Brendon Crews from Papillion LaVista High School. Crews had defeated Bigelow in the district finals the previous week. Cameron Schlender finished in 5th place at 182 pounds. Schlender lost a semifinal bout with Colton Wolfe from Columbus but was able to win his final match against Michael Curd from Omaha Northwest. Gabe Ledesma received his second state medal of his career after defaulting to 6th place after an injury in the consolation semifinals.
Kearney High School will be the third seed at the Nebraska State Dual Championships held at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on February 28th. This event will host the top 8 teams from all classes. The Bearcats will open with Hastings High School in the first round.
