Bearcats send 13 to State; District Runner UpPosted:
The Kearney High wrestling team finished as the A-1 District runner up. The Bearcats came up short against the number 1 ranked Patriots of Millard South by 14.5 points. KHS finished the day with 13 qualifiers including 2 champions and 6 runner-ups.
In the championship finals, at 132 pounds Ashton Arrants sparked the Bearcats with an early takedown and pin against Glenn Cass of Omaha Benson. The Bearcats then lost a string of hard fought battles. Damon Rodriguez came up short against Matt Falwich from Creighton Prep 4-3. Zane Hamaker lost 8-3 to Isaac Deloa from Millard South. Trevar Bigelow lost a hard fought battle with Brendan Crews from Papillion LaVista 5-4. Mason Merritt also lost by a point, 6-5 to Josh Anderson from Creighton Prep. Cameron Schlender was outscored by Cade Brownlee from Creighton Prep 11-8. At 220 pounds Aaron Griffith lost to Terry Jueb from Millard South 3-1. Gabe Ledesma claimed the second district championship for the Bearcats at Heavyweight. Ledesma pinned Bradley Easterlack from Millard North in the championship final.
In the consolation finals, Kearney finished 3rd at 106 pounds. Salvador Aguirre defeated Cody Douglas from Millard North 11-0. Jordan Bober followed with a pin against Ben Hallett from Papillioin LaVista to claim third place as well. Trey Grube finished 4th at 145 pounds. Grube lost to Francisco Vasquez from Omaha South. Zach Blaschko avenged a first round loss to Nick Janacek from Creighton Prep to finish 3rd at 170lbs. Leo Palamo also finished 3rd at 195lbs by defeating Davis Becker from Creighton Prep.
The wrestlers will be back in action at the state championships starting February 19th at the Centurylink Center in Omaha. Kearney is currently ranked 2nd in the state in class A.
