Bearcats finish in 3rd Place out of 36 TeamsPosted:
The Bearcats traveled to the prestigious 57th annual Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City, Kansas. This tournament featured 36 teams from 4 different states. Kearney High School finished in third place behind co-champions Pine Creek High School from Colorado Springs, Colorado and Garden City High School from Kansas.
Six Bearcat wrestlers found their way to the medal rounds (top 6 places). Jordan Bober battled through the consolation bracket after an early loss to claim 6th place at 113lbs. Bober went 3 – 3 picking up two pins in the tournament. Mason Merritt finished in 5th place at 160 pounds. Merritt was able to reach the semifinals after 3 straight victories. After suffering two consecutive losses, Merritt was able to defeat Brian Roberts from Pueblo Centennial 5-3 in overtime to claim 5th place. Aaron Griffith and Gabe Ledesma both reached the semi-finals at 220lbs and Heavyweight. After close losses in the semi-finals both Griffith and Ledesma battled back to claim 4th place. Damon Rodriguez reached the championships final at 132 pounds. Rodriguez pinned Garrett Whitson from Emporia in semi-final action. Rodriguez finished second losing to Zak Hensley from St. James Academy in the finals.
Other placers were Salvidor Aguirre at 106lbs, Gabe Crocker at 120lbs, Trevar Bigelow at 145lbs, Trey Grube at 152lbs, Cameron Schlender at 182lbs, and Leo Palamo at 195lbs. Aguirre finished in 11th place with a 4-3 record. Crocker finished in 8th place with a 3-3 record. Bigelow finished in 7th place and was 5-2. Grube finished in 12th place with a 3-4 record. Schlender finished with a 5-2 record and in 7th place. Palamo also placed 7th with a 5-2 record.
Kearney High School wrestlers will wrap up their regular season at the GNAC conference tournament in Columbus this Saturday. The district tournament will be the following Saturday at Papillion Lavista High School in Omaha.
