Bearcats Beat Amherst 54-19Posted:
Kearney High won an exciting local match up with Amherst High School by a final score of 54-19. Both the Bearcats and Broncos are ranked 7th in their respective classifications.
The action started at 106 pounds with Kearney’s Perry Swarm picking up a pin in the opening period. Archer Heelan followed quickly with a pin of his own at 113 pounds to put Kearney out to an early 12-0 lead.
Amherst pulled an upset at 120 pounds with Trevor Klingelhoefer coming from behind to defeat Hunter Nagatani from Kearney. The two teams traded victories in the next two weight classes. Kearney won at 126 pounds with Rylie Steele defeating Isaiah Shields and Amherst won at 132 pounds with #2 ranked Quinton Frank defeating Kearney’s Cisco Rivas.
The Bearcats then went on a run pinning Amherst wrestlers in the next 5 match ups. Brayden Smith (138 pounds), Gage Ferguson (145 pounds), Gauge McBride (152 pounds), Tate Kuchera (160 pounds) and Josh Pierson (170 pounds) all secured pins to push the Bearcats lead to 42 – 10.
Kearney High picked up 3 more points with a decision victory by Bronson Amend at 182 pounds. Amherst was able to pick up a 2-0 decision at 195 pounds as well as a pin at 220 pounds.before Peter Kreutzer finished off the night with a second period pin at Heavyweight.
“This was a great environment for our team to compete in,” said Kearney High coach Ty Swarm, “Amherst has a great history in wrestling and this was a fun competition tonight”.
The Bearcats are off for the weekend and will travel to Lincoln next week for a Thursday night dual with Lincoln East. Kearney will also compete the following day at the Gator Invite on Friday, January 10th starting at 3pm.
