Bearcats Win Final GNAC ChampionshipPosted:
In their final appearance in the GNAC conference, Kearney High wrestlers claimed a GNAC team championship. The Bearcats scored 146 points and finished with six individual champions and two runner-up finishes.
Gage Ferguson (120 lbs), Phillip Moomey (126 lbs), Nick James (138 lbs), Teontae Wilson (145 lbs), Sean Jackson (195 lbs), and Lee Herrington (HWT) all won their individual weight classes. Moomey, James, Jackson, and Herrington all defeated ranked opponents along the way to their championships.
Brayden Smith (113 lbs) and Steven Berumen (182 lbs) both finished as GNAC runner-ups. Smith was 4-1 on the day and Berumen finished 3-1 with two pins. Colten Kowalek (132 lbs) finished in third place with a 3-2 record on the day, Conner Brown also finished in third place at 220 pounds.
“It was nice to win the last GNAC conference championship before we enter the Heartland Athletic Conference next year,” said coach Ty Swarm, “this was another great weekend for us and we are excited to get into postseason competition”.
The Bearcats will be at Lincoln Southwest for district competition this Saturday. Wrestling begins at 9:30 am. Kearney has won their district tournament 3 of the last 5 years.
