Phillip Moomey Earns National Title In FargoPosted:
Four Bearcat wrestlers spent the last 10 days in Fargo, ND wrestling at the USA Cadet & Junior Freestyle/Greco Nationals. Fargo is commonly known as the nations toughest offseason tournament. Phillip Moomey, Nick James, Teontae Wilson, & Lee Herrington all competed for Team Nebraska.
The four started off the week competing in Freestyle. Phillip Moomey took an early loss in the round of 64. However, he did not let that set him back as he went on a dominating ten match win streak finishing 3rd place in the Cadet 120-pound bracket. This earned him an All-American finish picking up Kearney High’s 13th High School All-American and his 3rd All-American finish in his high school career. (Kearney High All-American List). Nick, Teontae & Lee all wrestled in the Junior division where they battled tough but came up short of placing.
They all finished off the week wrestling in the Greco Tournament. Phillip continued on the momentum he had built from his 10 match win streak picking up 5 falls/techs on the way to the finals. In the National Finals, he battled back from an early deficit to take the lead right at the end of the 1st period. He was able to hold off his opponent and claimed the Cadet 120 Pound National Championship. He became Kearney High’s first Fargo National Champion since David Miller in 1997, as well as, becoming Kearney High’s only double Fargo All-American and now has the most All-American finishes in school history (4). Again Nick, Teontae & Lee all wrestled well in the Junior division but came up short of placing.
